VFW Park
Mrs. FletcherVFW Park is the setting for a coercive prank involving Julian Spitzer and the place the narrator revisits before dawn, unable to stop worrying about him. The park’s change from a place that seems isolated at night to one with nearby houses visible in the morning frames the episode’s uncertainty: the narrator finds the toilet empty, but cannot know how Julian got free or how long he was confined.
Setting
The incident takes place beside a portable toilet near the soccer field at VFW Park. At night, the narrator experiences the park as sinister and remote, a setting where help might be difficult to reach. A few hours later, returning by bicycle, the narrator sees houses through the trees and finds the park less isolated than it had seemed in darkness.
The Incident at the Soccer Field
At the portable toilet, Wade asks Julian for his phone. Julian questions what Wade plans to do with it, but the exchange ends with Julian entering the toilet. Wade then shuts the flimsy door and seals it with duct tape taken from another participant’s glove compartment. He leaves Julian’s phone outside in the grass. The prank turns the portable toilet into a place of confinement, making the park the scene of both the group’s action and the narrator’s later unease.
Return Before Dawn
After going home, the narrator cannot sleep, thinking about Julian trapped in the toilet and wondering whether Julian’s parents know he is missing or have tried calling the phone left outside. Around five in the morning, the narrator rides a bicycle back to VFW Park. The toilet is empty and the tape seal has been broken. The narrator cannot determine whether Julian was confined only briefly before someone came along or whether Julian freed himself.
Aftermath and Significance
The empty toilet offers relief without resolving what happened. In the days afterward, the group worries that Julian may tell his parents, the police, or his friends. They also recognize that taping someone inside a portable toilet could bring serious trouble with parents, coaches, or college admissions officers. VFW Park thus remains linked not only to the prank but to the uncertainty and consequences that follow it.
